Last weekend’s auctions

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Thanks to all our bidders who braved the rain and the mud on Saturday. We had 117 registered bidders despite the weather. Ellen Church’s historic trunk was purchased for the historical society in her hometown in Iowa. In fact I’ll be delivering it to them as I travel to Wisconsin for a furniture auction next week. The hits of the auction were the old Colson calendars. Our regular cashier had to be away because her father passed away, but our 12-year old daughter, Susannah, stepped up and learned how to do the job. Way to go Susannah! She got a chance to practice again on Sunday at our 850 lot coin auction (which we finished in a record 6-1/2 hours!). We had almost 200 registered bidders on the floor and online. Thanks to auctioneers, Greg Parrott and Tucker Wood, for helping us with both auctions. The coin and precious metal market is still strong as evidenced today as gold went over $1,200 an ounce, an historical high. Even though it’s a lot of strain on the family to produce a coin catalog, it’s a lot of fun to see the end result.

Sunday at the KC Hall in Paris at 12:00 noon, live and online, we will be having our coin, currency, stamps, Lincoln memorabilia, and political auction. Highlights include NGC graded California gold coins, bulk US silver coins, and an 85-ounce sterling silver 75th anniversary Diamond Jubilee Ford Model A car with its display stand and all its accompanying documents. It has half an ounce of gold and Cartier-set diamond headlights. This car was designed and built in 1978 just before the Hunt Brothers drove the silver market to an all-time high. Many of these cars were probably melted. I could only find one of these cars for sale on the Internet and they wanted $12,000!

Great estate sale coming up this Saturday!

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Rain or shine! Spring has sprung so please come out and enjoy a good old country estate sale with us this Saturday, May 1 at 2:00 pm. Highlights include a fully restored buck board wagon, two Ford tractors, some original U.O. Colson artwork, as well as a very interesting historical item–a flat top trunk owned by the world’s first stewardess. Her name was Ellen Church and in 1930 she became the first ever flight attendant. Google “world’s first stewardess” if you don’t believe me!  Selected items will be sold live and online.
There are also lots of good usable household items for everyone. Anita Rhoads will have some delicious food prepared. It should be a fun day. Hope to see you there!

Numismatic

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Numismatic or Coin Collecting is the science of coins under an economic, legislative, metrological and artistic point of view. It has a great importance in the whole Historical and Archaeological science; as a matter of fact into the peculiarity of a people or age the Coin holds a fundamental role: Numismatic has always reflected the political, economical, artistic and social trends of the time in which it developed.
